Technology has been gradually improving over the years and now in most homes people own a computer, smartphone or both. Computers came a long way from starting as a simple calculator to a large information database to now being portable to a smartphone. It is impressive how far we got as a society to have a portable computer. Now we see it being used everywhere such as restaurants, vehicles, homes, and even school. It has become a habit where you must carry a smartphone or computer when going anywhere and like a muscle memory we constantly investigate our phones or computers to do any activity.
Computers and smartphones are essential to our daily lives. There are devices everywhere on the hand of a person being used for call, text, socialize, play games, and watch movies, but what drives us to keep using this technology every day? What goes in our mind as soon as we turn on a laptop or a smartphone? Can we abandon our old technology and move on to a new one after a long-time use?
Two researchers, Sällberg, Henrik from Blekinge Institute of Technology and Bengtsson, Lars from Lund University have conducted a sample of 192 students from a business university in Sweden who volunteered to answer few questions multiple choice questions ranging between 1-7 (strongly disagree to strongly agree). They asked multiple questions how much they know about using smartphones and computers and how well they can execute using them with their current knowledge of how to use them. According to Sällberg and Bengtsson (2016), they had 70.3% male and 29.7% females as their test subjects. They did not, however, calculate how much value the students felt on the technology. They wanted to know the reasons why students use this technology and what affect the long-term usage have on a student and the motivation that is affecting students when it comes to using of smartphones and computers.
The results were very favoring towards the positive side, when students use their smartphones and computers they would use it mostly for entertainment such as games, movies, and social networking. It turns out students do not think of it as a chore, but more of a habit to entertain themselves and it is personally rewarding for them to use the device.
Computers resulted in many things being connected. Results showed that even though students were showing positive motivation to use computers, but they were showing many sides of having to do professional work or school work on the computer. This caused the students to think of doing the work to avoid punishment or doing something for their own sake.
Overall, students preferred to keep using both smartphones and computers for personal gains. Even though most students did have the knowledge about the smartphone or computer such as knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their computer.
According to Sällberg and Bengtsson (2016), there are still many things to research when it comes to understanding how comfortable people are using their technology when it comes to certain situations. They want to do an in-depth research on computer and smartphone usage from frequent and infrequent users and determine what exactly makes us enjoy the use of these devices.
Today people adapt to new technology as you can see from new smartphones being released every year and people rush to buy them quickly. It is a matter of personal favor gains and new technology is being invented to satisfy the people and profit from them. It is hard to figure out what people are thinking about technology, but with more information, we can invent better technology to make our lives easier.
